Inoculations – The Recommended & The Required Jabs!

 | Clicks: 653

Inoculations are very tricky, some of them are recommended (advised) and some are required (you may be refused entry to the country without proof of inoculation)! Whenever you are planning a trip to come to Belize or if you win a trip to Belize, regardless, you will need to visit your doctor before embarking on your voyage.

*Remember always carry with you your International Certificate of Vaccination, signed by a doctor and validated with an official stamp, as you may be required by local health authorities to prove that you have been inoculated against certain diseases and infections.

You should try to see a doctor at least 4 weeks before your departure date so that it will allow time for your vaccines to take effect. If you do not have an entire 4 weeks then you should go to a doctor as soon as possible.

There are certain vaccines that are routine and every traveler should make sure that they are up to date on these. Some of these vaccines will include, but are not limited to the following: MMR, or measles, mumps and rubella vaccine; the DPT vaccine for diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus; the polio vaccine; and immunizations against the flu and chicken pox.

Some Recommended Vaccines may include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Rabies and Malaria. If you are travelling from other countries where Yellow Fever is prevalent such as Peru or Brazil you will need to have proof that you have been vaccinated for Yellow Fever or you may not be granted permission to enter the country.

There are certain things you can do to make your stay in a foreign country more comfortable. Some of these things are:

  • Wear cotton long sleeves – for mosquitoes
  • Wear sun block
  • Wear insect repellent – with deet.
  • Always drink sterilized water and make sure your body is properly hydrated
  • Eat foods that are closer to what you are used to; don’t attempt to make a complete change.
  • Take along with you your prescription and any other medicine you may need.
  • Have a handy first aid kit that has Imodium or some type of medication for diarrhea

This is not a complete guide for visitors to this region. It is best that you consult your doctor before you travel. Be sure to let them know all the places you will be going through and what kind of conditions you expect to encounter. Any country you visit should have their recommended and required inoculations since every country have their precautionary practices. If for any reason you cannot be vaccinated be sure to have a vaccination waiver – you may still encounter problems.
