Botanical Gardens in Belize - Ginger family

Zingiberaceae, or the ginger family, is a family of flowering plants consisting of aromatic perennial herbs with creeping horizontal or tuberous rhizomes, comprising about 52 genera and more than 1300 species, distributed throughout tropical Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Many species are important ornamental plants, spices, or medicinal plants.

At Ian Anderson Caves Branch we have 14 different species. Some will puzzle you with the amazing shape of their flowers; others will amaze you with their incredible scent as you pass by.

Some will get your attention because of the variety of pollinators: hummingbirds, ants and bees that visit them. Have you ever tasted ginger snaps, ginger ale or ginger tea? How delish! If you haven’t then you’re missing out – it’s a spicy treat that’s good for you! Ginger also has a number of medicinal uses such as relief for pains, cold & flu, gas and others.
